Personal identification number

A personal identification number (PIN), or sometimes redundantly a PIN number or PIN code, is a numeric (sometimes alpha-numeric) passcode used in the process of authenticating a user accessing a system.

The PIN has been the key to facilitating the private data exchange between different data-processing centers in computer networks for financial institutions, governments, and enterprises. PINs may be used to authenticate banking systems with cardholders, governments with citizens, enterprises with employees, and computers with users, among other uses.

In common usage, PINs are used in ATM or POS transactions, secure access control (e.g. computer access, door access, car access), internet transactions, or to log into a restricted website.

Examples of use of identification code
1. The Elbit Systems program creates an identification code that civilian pilots must transmit before entering Israeli airspace.
2. Advertisement This system, developed by Elbit, is based on a smart card that broadcasts the pilot‘s personal identification code to a control center in Israel shortly before the plane lands.
3. Codesharing between two airlines allows an airline to put its two–letter identification code on the flights of another airline as they appear in computerized reservations systems and in the Official Airline Guide.
4. The Transportation Department also said the agreement enhances "code–sharing" opportunities for U.S. and Mexican airlines, "opening up new competitive options for travelers between the United States and Mexico." Code–sharing is a commercial pact between two airlines that allows an airline to put its two–letter identification code on the flights of another airline in computerized reservations systems. This means, for example, that customers can fly on a US Airways flight from their hometown to a city served by both US Airways and United Airlines, and then continue on a United Airlines aircraft to their final destination using the US Airways ticket designator.
